Profile:
Thomas has several post graduate diplomas and certificates of participation in Mining Projects evaluation, Environmental Geochemistry, Mining environmental management, Extractive Resource Management, Environmental and Regulatory Monitoring of the Gas and Gas Industry, Project Management for Senior Executives, Petroleum Economics and Risk Management from several universities and institutions around the World.Thomas is an Associate Professor of Geology, arising from the ranks of lecture and Senior Lecture from 1995 to 2009. He was appointed Chief Director of the Ministry of Energy in January 2011, a position he occupied until July 2017 when he voluntarily returned to the Department of Earth Science as Professor in Geology. As Chief Director, he acquitted himself very well, adjudged the Best Performing Chief Director for 2013 and 2014 and Second and third Best in 2015 and 2016, respectively.
He was appointed Head of the Department of Geology, University of Ghana from 2008 to 2010, during which period, he led his colleagues in the radical revision of the department’s academic programmes to include professional development courses and new post graduate programmes in Petroleum Geosciences, Modular Masters programmes in Water Resources and Mineral Exploration. He was instrumental in the change of the name of the Department from Geology to Department of Earth Science to reflect its programmes coverage and global trends.
His academic and research interests are in the areas of Mining Sector Investment Appraisal, Mining, Environment and Sustainable Development, Petroleum systems, Mining and Petroleum Policies in some developing countries and Economic Development and Global Initiatives in the extractive Sector. He has led numerous research and training programmes in several African countries including International Validation of Ghana’s EITI process, training programmes for the Ghanaian, Malian and Sierra Leonean Parliaments and ECOWAS Mining Department.
Thomas also worked as a research associate of the Third World Network from 1996 to 2010,
Resource Person and Course Convener for the Revenue Watch Summer School on Oil and Gas at GIMPA leading the development of the first course modules for the summer schools; conducted collaborative research with the Africa Mining Research Group (GRAMA), University of Quebec in Montreal (UQAM), contributing chapters in four high profile books produced by the Group. In total, he has over fifty publications to his credit including two books.
He served on a number of University of Ghana Governing Boards and Committees, Member of the Implementation Committee of the Universities of Energy Natural Resources (UENR) and Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Member of the Search Party for the recruitment of Vice Chancellor for the University of Ghana in, 2009, Chairman , Search Party for recruitment of Rector for Bolgatanga Polytechnic in 2011, Member of a number of professional associations and serves on a number of Governing Boards of various State and International institutions.
